Breaking Free from Shame

Shame. It’s that deep, heavy feeling that whispers, “You’re not enough.” Unlike guilt, which says, “I did something wrong,” shame says, “I am wrong.” It’s not just about our actions; it attacks our very identity, keeping us stuck in cycles of fear, silence, and disconnection.

Shame often takes root in childhood, when we internalise messages from others—family, peers, or society—that make us feel unworthy. Over time, these messages shape how we see ourselves and how we show up in the world. Left unchecked, shame becomes a barrier to authentic living and meaningful connection.

But shame doesn’t have to define you. You can begin your journey of healing and freedom by taking these steps:

  1. Name it: Recognise shame for what it is. Call it out and don’t let it hide in the shadows of your thoughts.

  2. Own your story: Accept your experiences—both the good and the painful—as part of what makes you, you.

  3. Tell your story: Share your truth with someone safe. Shame thrives in silence, but when we speak it out, it loses its power.

As Brené Brown beautifully says, “Shame cannot survive being spoken. It cannot survive empathy.”

Vulnerability is the antidote to shame.

When we open up, we invite healing and connection, discovering that we are loved and accepted not in spite of our imperfections, but because of them.

You don’t have to carry shame alone. God’s grace covers you, His love redefines you, and His truth sets you free. One step at a time, you can move from shame to wholeness. 💛
